Renew Malaysia Passport in 2 hours at Sri Hartamas

If you're Malaysian and like me, who has renewed their passport in KL will understand the horrors every applicant go through especially at KL immigration offices back in the days. You arrive at 7.30am, stood in a queue which you realized later that it ain't the right one, then told to complete documents before getting a queue number. Then when you're done with your documents and photograph, you are in queue number 400+. And if you get to process application before 12, you can collect it in the afternoon. Otherwise, you can only pick it up the day after, which meant time and work leave wasted. To kill off time, you can only stand, cause the dilapidated, torn and disgusting cushion chairs available were just enough for 50 people. To make things worse, the stench of body odor across the entire area as 400 people and counting in an almost non air conditioned area. And try not to drink so much water as the stench of pee from the non-maintained disgusting toilet will linger in your smell memory forever. That was my experience 5 years ago at Subang Old Airport Immigrations office.

So, 5 years have passed and it's time for a new passport. Things have changed tremendously for the past few years; machine auto renewal, last year you could renew your passport online and collect it the day after, there's no form-filling system anymore, and opened on Saturday and Sundays! Checked out and the Duta-Sri Hartamas Immigrations office is just 2-3km away. What a relief which means less jam and more sleeping time! I read from other blogs about the new changes but here's my experience.

Alarm went off at 6.15am, snoozed till 6.30am, made myself coffee at 6.45am as well as shower and dolling up to look good for my photograph later. Left the house at 7.15am and reached Duta-Sri Hartamas Kementerian Dalam Negeri by 7.30am. Was greeted by friendly staff and asked him about the office location as well as parking. Just go straight and make a right turn, look for parking lot.

It was drizzling this morning, a blur shot of the Duta Mosque from KDN. Friendly security guards greeted and guided me to head to Level 1 for Immigrations Division matters.

Look for this building

Mall or government office?

Basically the new process goes like this:
  1. Grab your number. Make sure you don't lose it. Processing, payment & collection paging number will be the same. Even if you lose it, you'll be required to scan thumbprint for verification.
  2. Wait to be called by processing counter. Provide simple updates like current address, status, phone number & height. Hand over old passport & IC to officer.
  3. Get your digital photo taken. Camera is attached to the counter booth.
  4. Confirm your passport validity & pay.
  5. Wait for your number to be paged for payment.I paid RM300 for 5 years, inclusive of digital photo.
  6. Come back within an hour for collection. Go kill time.
  7. Wait for number to be paged. Proceed to counter & collect your IC, old & new passport.

Official Receipt. Remember to keep this for collection later.

While killing time, checking out the list of services available at KDN.

Grab breakfast or just chill and read something.

Pretty decent gov office cafeteria food at RM3.50 only

Don't forget to selfie. Haha

Immigrations Office at 8:30am. Chilled & waited outside before my turn is up.

My number got paged by 9 am and I was asked to present my payment receipt, verify via thumb print before my IC & old+new passports are handed over by the friendly offer. All done by 9.15am (1 hour & 45 minutes). Two thumbs up to KL Immigrations office for a pleasant experience! Faith restored!
